Are you Eddie Wright from the band Outline?

Wow. I have a funny story for you. I hope you’re sitting down.

Way back in 2001 while scouring my college’s server for mp3s I found a folder titled ‘OUTLINE’ on someone’s machine. At the time i was copying any music that sounded like it could be something I would like based on the band name – basically just living the broadband dream after using AOL on my parent’s dial-up for the past 4 years.

So I eventually listen to the mp3s that are in this OUTLINE folder, and i really like them. A lot. One song has a weird digital hick-up in the file, but that’s ok. I burn a CD to keep in the car, I throw some songs onto mix CDs for friends and all that other stuff you do when you discover a new band. I also tried to find more info about the band online…without much luck. I think I found a fan page (maybe?) that had some images from a show and something about the band breaking up. I don’t really remember too much, but I do remember trying to do a similar search not too long after that and not finding anything at all.

A few years later while bored an my 1st job/internship I start googling Outline again to see if I can find anything. The internet has done nothing but get better, so I figure maybe I’ll come across some info. And I do! Outline was signed to Triple Crown, and their CD is called ‘A Boy Can Dream’. That’s something, but the Triple Crown site doesn’t really have any more info. From that search I am able to find the CD for sale on some website and I buy it. I rip the CD and have some nice high quality mp3s on my ipod and no longer have that weird scratchy sound on ‘Growing Up With Atom’, but still expect to hear it every time I play it.

Fast forward to today: sitting at work playing music from my ipod, I scroll past OUTLINE. “Been a little while, that sounds like a good idea,” I say to myself. A few songs in I get to thinking about how I still know nothing about this band. Back to the Google! I’m pretty much awesome at the internet, so I dive in. I first find an article from 2009 on theNJunderground.com (http://thenjunderground.com/blog/tag/outline) about Brand New, The Starting Line, Outline and Random Task all playing a show at M+M Hall in July 2001. This throws me into the way back machine because I haven’t thought about the M+M Hall in forever. The article goes on about how cool it was for all of these bands to play together before they, and some of their members got big. It also said someone from Outline went on to form Steel Train. I’d heard that name, but never heard the music. So I go to their myspace page (hah!) and listen to one of their songs hoping that I might hear something that sounds like my beloved Outline. NOPE. Anyway, back to my search, and I come across an ebay auction for ‘A Boy Can Dream’…for $70. SEVENTY DOLLARS! I check the listing to see if their is any outstanding information in the description. There is not. But there is all of the information of everyone in the band transcribed from the case. So then I search your name, and find an old guitarist from Florida (http://eddiewright.net/), some guy that was torturing people in his basement in Philly, and you.

So here we are. I still don’t know anything about your band, but I’m thinking you can give me a quick history lesson in exchange for the purchase of a copy of Broken Bulbs. Sound good?
        Good.
